The Rare Book Community: Collectors, Dealers and Libraries -Presented by Daniel Slive, Russell A. Johnson, Michael Lerner and Gordon Hollis, Moderator.
This panel discussion will give insights into the inner workings of the world of rare books directly from collectors, librarians and antiquarian book dealers.

Daniel J. Slive is the Reference and Special Projects Librarian in the Mandeville Special Collections Library at the University of California, San Diego. Prior to this position, he served as an Associate in the Americana Department of the William Reese Company; Rare Books Librarian in UCLA Special Collections; and Reference Librarian at the John Carter Brown Library. He is also an active member of the Rare Books and Manuscripts Section, and the Bibliographical Society of America. His experience in special collections libraries and the trade provides him with a broad-based view of the extended rare book community, particularly the relationships between collectors, librarians, and dealers.

Russell Johnson has been archivist and cataloger for the History & Special Collections Division at UCLA's Louise Darling Biomedical Library since 1997. His collection development specialties include neuroscience history and the John C. Liebeskind History of Pain Research and Treatment Collection. Four years ago he began the library's collection of Baby Books (memory books in which parents could record a child's developmental milestones and accumulate mementos), now numbering in the hundreds. He will describe how the collection grew, and why it got started in a “biomedical” library in the first place.

Michael Lerner is a Best Supporting Actor Oscar nominee and avid book collector. He was born in Brooklyn, NY, attending Brooklyn College for his B.A. In English. He secured his Master's degree in English and Dramatic Arts, with a thesis on 19th Century English Actor William Charles Macready. He received a Fullbright scholarship to study Theatre and Acting at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts under the tutelage of the late playwright Christopher Fry. From 1970 on, Lerner has lived and worked as a professional actor in Los Angeles, doing mostly film and television. His book collecting interests began in his childhood in Brooklyn, visiting the famous Bookseller's Row and The Strand on 4th Avenue on the Lower East Side. Over thirty years, Lerner has built a collection encompassing color plate books from the Regency period, great illustrated books in fables, emblems and festival, and now those from the great illustrators, Barlow, Hollar, de Hooghe, etc.. Michael will discuss the highlights of his book collecting adventures in Los Angeles.

Gordon Hollis has been president of Golden Legend, Inc. since its inception in 1981. He holds a Master's Degree in English and Fine Writing from the University of Chicago, and has written many articles on the rare book trade. Gordon is past president of the Southern California Chapter ABAA and member of the ABAA Board of Governors (1992-1994). Golden Legend specializes in rare books and prints in the arts, especially fine and performing arts. The firm has been a member of the ABAA since 1984.
